The Perfect Winter Coat
Autumn has arrived and I am choosing to stay positive about the upcoming weather. After all, there are lots of things that I enjoy about this season: Autumn is by far my favourite season for fashion, it’s also an excuse to drink lots more of my favourite coffee to keep me warm and I absolutely love watching the colours in our landscape change. But, the top of my list is picking out a new winter coat! I have started my winter coat search early.
I will admit I have a wardrobe bursting at the seams with lots of different styles of coats that I have accumulated over the years but every autumn I like to treat myself to a brand new winter coat. A little present from me, to me! After all, it is probably the most worn item in our winter wardrobes. You have probably noticed that there are so many fantastic coats to be found on the high-street right now which makes choosing ‘the right one’ even more difficult. I see a good coat as an investment so your coat should be stylish and warm yet practical. If you manage to nail all three then you are on to a winner. Then of course take care of your investment and it will last you years.
Today I showcase some of my favourite winter coats from Mc Elhinney’s Deparment Store, in Ballybofey in Co.Donegal. Being a born and reared Donegal Doll (as we say up there!!) I have always loved shopping in this local department store over the years and it’s by far my favourite store to shop in when I want to find one off unique designs. I always find that Mc Elhinney’s stock tasteful, unique and stylish clothing and accessories that you just cant seem to get your hands on anywhere else and I LOVE that. Read more about my recent fashion finds and collaborations with them here and here. I was in store recently and choose my favourite coats that I think are a clever investment for the new season. I hope you like them as much as I do.

Pretty Winter Pastels…
Who said winter coats have to be dark and dreary? You might say pastels are just for summer wear, but they are not anymore! As soon as I spotted this powder blue coat it was love at first sight. I really love the tartan panels on the sleeves and back of this coat and I feel that this adds a uniqueness and quirky touch to the coat. I love anything that is unique or quirky! This coat is crafted from soft and cosy long hair wool blend fabric so it is very warm and it is designed by Almost Famous with a classic straight shape. The coat features a concealed snap button placket, pockets and a detachable fabric belt that will cinch in your waist creating a feminine silhouette. Always a plus in my eyes! I mentioned in a recent blog which you can read here that I love monochrome and once again it is a huge trend for Autumn-Winter. Yes, checks carry on as a major trend so if you own one already keep hold of it you’ll be getting lots more wear out of it. The simplicity of monochrome makes it a timeless classic. I love the touches of red throughout this coat which helps bring a pop of colour to it. Why not add a touch of luxury to your wardrobe with this gorgeous chic ‘Ajaccio coat’ from ‘Pennyblack’. I like this coats versatility and I think is the perfect outer layer to wear to work and it also looks really great draped over a little black dress. Personally, I think this coat is really gorgeous worn casually with skinny blue jeans, a white shirt underneath and a pair of flat ankle boots. There’s also plenty of room for layering inside. This coat is crafted from warm long hair mohair and alpaca wool blend fabric so is super warm and cosy and is designed with a comfortable oversize A-line shape. And my favourite, the practical part….it has POCKETS!!! Browse some more of my favourite check and monochrome coats here, and here.

More than any other season, Autumn really is a time to invest in these quality staples. Where better to begin than the classic camel coat! Of course, as a key neutral, camel never goes out of style. Camel is eternally chic. Update your outerwear with this Boutique Collection at Mc Elhinney’s wrap over coat. This wool rich piece has a wide collar, front pockets, a wide waist belt and a stitched trim. You can style this chic look by layering over everything from a dress and tights to jeans and knitwear for a stylish daytime look. This camel coat is a bargain at €49.95.
