Frockadvisor | Meeting Sonya Lennon
On Saturday 26th September, my sister Lisa and I attended an event in Mc Elhinneys Department Store in Donegal. The event was organised as part of their AW Trend Week where they had been running different events throughout the week to celebrate their new AW15 collections and a range of different Autumn/ Winter trends from fashion and accessories to the latest makeup trends. Unfortunately between working all week then being struck down with a bad cold, I didn’t get to attend all of their events but I did get a chance to pop along to the ‘Frockadvisor’ event on Saturday with special guest, the fabulous Sonya Lennon.
As most fashion lovers will already know, Sonya Lennon is a stylist, designer and TV presenter. She is undoubtedly a woman of many talents and has now turned her hand to fusing technology with retail to create an exciting new fashion app called Frockadvisor. Sonya, along with fellow presenter, stylist and designer Brendan Courtney, co-founder of Lennon Courtney Designs, (which is also available at Dunnes Stores, check out their amazing collection here, ) have teamed up to create a new digital platform for independent fashion retailers called Frockadvisor. Sonya who has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the fashion industry describes Frockadvisor as “a dedicated fashion and social commerce platform”. At the event she informed us that the goal of this app is to give independent retailers, such as Mc Elhinney’s Department store, an online destination on which to offer a personal service to customers.
How does Frockadvisor work?….
To put it simply, Frockadvisor is an app not only for independent boutiques like Mc Elhinney’s but also for you and me, the customers on the Irish market who love buying quality and buying Irish. All you have to do is simply download the app to your phone or tablet, sign up ( it takes 2secs!), take a photo or describe with words the item you are looking for and your favourite retailers and those in your current area will respond to your request with what they have in store that matches your what you are looking for. Yes, it is that simple!!!
Fashion & Style Talk….
At the event, Sonya also gave an informal talk about all things fashion and style. I really enjoyed this part as you can imagine! She mentioned the importance of exploring your colour palette and not relying too much on black and white. She also advised us to always choose a shoe with a pop of colour as a base for choosing an outfit, which will help you veer away from your usual black or darker shades. Sonya spoke about the importance of dressing for your own specific body shape so that you feel confident and comfortable in your own skin. She is a massive fan of accessorizing and said that instead of investing in expensive clothing that you may only wear once or twice, you should invest in accessories to update your look. Her talk was informative and interesting and when she was finished the ladies in attendance had a chance to meet Sonya and ask her any questions they might have about the Frockadvisor app and to just have a little chat with her if they needed any help styling outfits or wanted her expert opinion what on styles would suit their body shape.
Sonya’s must have wardrobe staples:
Sonya spoke about the MUST HAVE items that she feels every woman should have in their wardrobe:
– A crisp white shirt
– A couple of silk tops in a range of different colours that you can dress up or dress down
– A good tailored jacket is a must have
– A good quality coat is essential paying attention to structure and how it shapes and compliments your figure
It was so lovely to meet Sonya who was very friendly and approachable. My sister and I spoke with her for a while about her app Frockadvisor and I also got a chance to speak to her about my blog. I love that she took time at the end of her talk to speak with everyone individually. It was also great to meet fellow Donegal blogger Emma Murray of the blog ‘The Fashion Chair Blog’. We are both Donegal ladies but we had never had the opportunity before to properly meet so it was great to finally have a little chat with Emma at this event. She is a really down to earth lady and I am loving her snap chats they are always so entertaining and honest!! After the event, Lisa and I had a little nosey around Mc Elhinney’s and treated ourselves to a few new items! I bought this lovely burgundy faux fur detachable collar which I plan on wearing over a range of different coats, jackets and cardi’s. Lisa bought this gorgeous 70’s style patch work suede top. (You can buy this gorgeous top here)
What I wore:
As the event was during the day on a Saturday between 2-6pm I opted for a casual outfit that I could then wear out for dinner and drinks with my sister that evening. I wore leather look leggings which I got in TOPSHOP a few years ago ( Find a similar pair here and here.) I wore a suede rustic coloured fringed jacket which I bought two weeks ago in Mc Elhinney’s (Buy this jacket here and it also comes in a caramel gorgeous colour here). As the jacket was really the main feature of my outfit with the fringing being quite dramatic I kept the rest of the outfit simple and wore all black. I wasn’t feeling too well leading up to this event and was recovering from a horrible cold so I felt most comfortable wearing black as I find it is a really flattering colour. You really cant go wrong with black!! My black fringed boots are a recent purchase from PENNEYS which have a comfortable, not too high heel and fringing details on the sides (you can find these in stores now, but I also spotted these beauts on ASOS, shop here. )
I finished off my outfit with a very last minute D.I.Y necklace that I put together just before I ran out the door!! I simply attached a large vintage clip on earring to a thin gold chain that I found in my room! Sonya actually commented on it and said it was a very clever idea and a few other people asked me about it and couldn’t believe it was a clip on earring!! I was in a rush so I just about got time to brush my hair but I am loving my new shorter locks! Lisa, on the other hand looked every bit the fashionista, as always, wearing a tailored pair of white trousers, a black blazer with leather sleeves and simple black high heels. I wish I had a photo of her outfit, she looked stunning. We had a lovely day and evening together catching up.
Frockadvisor really is one of the most exciting fashion-technology projects to emerge from the Emerald Isle. I downloaded the app weeks ago and I LOVE it! If you are a fashion lover and like me, you love finding something that is unique I recommend you download this app IMMEDIATELY!! It was lovely to get the opportunity to meet Sonya, she is a very genuine, hardworking and inspiring woman. Thanks to Mc Elhinney’s Department store for inviting us along to this event.
