Wedding Makeup …
Makeup really isn’t my thing! I will hold my hands up and admit that I really only know the bare minimum when it comes to doing makeup. Obviously for my wedding day I wanted to get my makeup done professionally by a talented makeup artist who would enhance my features and give me a natural bridal look so that I would look like (a better version of!) myself on my wedding day. I personally believe that there is nothing worse than that ‘caked on’ makeup look or a bride suddenly changing her image completely and not resembling herself what so ever. The groom’s must get such a shock at the altar!!! You should look like yourself on your wedding day. It is definitely not the time to experiment with a new look or vibrant shades of eye shadows or lip colours!! It was my sister Lisa who suggested makeup artist Kerrie James Mc Gee to me. Kerrie is based in Co.Donegal and is a certified makeup artist who trained at Oonagh Boman School of Makeup who specializes in bridal and occasion makeup. My sister Lisa had been telling me about how passionate Kerrie is about makeup and suggested I get a trial done for my hen party to see what I thought. I got a trial done at the end of November and I really loved how Kerrie did my makeup. It was natural, fuss free, she enhanced my features and most importantly I looked like myself! Kerrie has a real talent for creating beautiful flawless dewy skin – and what bride does not want her skin to glow on her wedding day!
The wedding morning….
With our wedding ceremony kick starting at 12.00pm we were always a bit concerned about time. We also thought that with having to get five peoples makeup ready along with us travelling to Letterkenny first to get our hair done that it might be a bit of a rush and add stress to the morning. I ran my worries about this by my sister and she suggested booking makeup artist Mari-Claire O’Donnell as a second makeup artist for the day. This was SUCH a smart idea. This way Kerrie could focus entirely on my makeup (and Lisa’s) and Mari-Claire could work on the other two bridesmaid’s and my mums makeup. It would mean less stress and no worrying on the wedding morning which sounded perfect. I contacted Mari-Claire, luckily she was available and we booked her straight away. Mari-Claire is another extremely talented lady based in Letterkenny, Co.Donegal who has a natural flair and talent for creating beautiful makeup look’s. She focused entirely on my two bridesmaids and mothers and she has such a lovely way with her, making everyone feel fabulous and at ease. I loved how she did both bridesmaids eye-shadow’s in particular and how she enhanced their gorgeous natural features such as their high cheek bones and choose shades to bring our their eye colour. My mother would very rarely wear makeup and requested a natural look. Mari- Claire did not disappoint and my mum looked absolutely gorgeous, her skin was flawless and her gorgeous large green eyes were accentuated.
Thankfully both makeup artist’s were able to come to our house on the morning of the wedding to do our makeup. As I mentioned, we wanted the wedding morning to be stress free and to have plenty of time to have breakfast and enjoy the morning so hiring two makeup artist’s was a very smart idea. I have to thank my sister Lisa for her quick thinking on this one and her suggestions!! From the get go the atmosphere was just so lovely in the house when we were getting ready. The music was on and the bubbles flowing! Both Kerrie and Mari-Claire made the morning completely hassle free and as relaxed as possible. A couple of times I started to get a fit of the giggles and the next minute I found myself (for no reason!) getting teary eyed! Kerrie who did my make up was amazing. She is one of nicest, genuine and kindest people you will ever meet. She cracked jokes and told me some stories of her own wedding day which kept my nerves at bay. I felt so confident in her ability and knew my makeup would be done exactly the way I wanted it – which is what you want to feel like on the morning of your wedding. I don’t get my makeup done very often professionally so I always find I am a little hesitant when it comes to makeup but having had a trial with Kerrie before my hen party I knew I was in safe hands. I definitely suggest getting a trial before your wedding day. I was delighted with how much time was put into prepping my skin which ensured my makeup lasted all day and night.
Wedding morning makeup – Timing…
We started with hair at 7am in Patrick Gildea’s in Letterkenny and we were back in my parent’s house in Ramelton by 8.30am to have some breakfast with bubbles (of course!!) and to our start makeup. Mari-Claire and Kerrie were already at the house, all set up, with big warm smiles and hugs for when we arrived and ready to start. Mari-Claire started with bridesmaids Mairead then Sinead’s makeup and finished up with my mums. Kerrie started with my sister Lisa’s makeup and the brides makeup is always done last then so I had time to talk to everyone and get last minute bit’s ready. We found we had plenty of time which was brilliant. We also had time for everyone’s final makeup top’s up around 11.00ish before leaving for the church. My parents house is only a quick 10 min drive to the church where we were getting married so we got into our dresses at 11.30 and got last minute little bit’s ready like finishing packing our overnight cases etc.
(Tip: Drop your overnight case to your wedding venue the evening before the wedding. My brother was on hand that morning to drop ours down for us after the ceremony but it is a good idea to leave them down the evening before if possible so no one has to be left with that job!!)
We were all very happy with how our bridal makeup turned out. It was just the look I had imagined for my wedding day and it lasted all day and night with a little bit of lip-stick top up. My sister kept my lipstick in her clutch bag for me as I decided not to bring a bag or phone with me on the day.
I love how both makeup artist’s made everyone look like themselves and enhanced everyone’s natural beauty.
If you are a bride to be planning a wedding or just on the look out for fantastic new makeup artists, then I highly recommend both Kerrie James Mc Gee and Mari-Claire O’Donnell. I will add their social media business pages below:
