Hey!

Today, I am back with a topic that is a little bit different and one that is quite personal to me.  I get a lot of people contacting me to ask for advice about Art college. Should they go to Art college, was it worth it, will it help them to get professional work in creative industries and businesses such as art teaching, illustration, design, animation, photography and so on.

Should you go to art college V’s being self taught is an age old discussion that is needlessly personal and also divisive. For me, going to college and studying art and design wasn’t just about being taught/trained… it was about learning how to learn, learning how to think, how to grow and how to be independent. I don’t really buy into the romanticized notion that learning more will “spoil” some genius self-taught artist!  Sure, I could have learnt all the technical skills through other method’s and I am sure I would have if I had not being given the opportunity to go to art college. However, being in a creative environment every day for four years studying Art, Craft and Design meant that I had an opportunity to learn a lot more about research, planning and pushing concept’s through as well as opening myself up to new ways of creative thinking because I had peers and tutors around me all the time helping and guiding me. Of course, if your ambition is a formal position in the ‘art business’, then credential’s are required.  For instance, I now work as an art teacher in a secondary school as well as running adult evening painting classes. I could not have attained this teaching position without the correct professional qualification’s.  I have friends who work as illustrators, architects, designers, in the fashion industry and employers naturally do ask for their credentials and qualification’s when applying for new positions or opportunities.  In my opinion, I think that now more than ever, there is just so much competition out there so having the essential qualification’s and necessary credential’s how that you are serious about a position withing the creative industries. It does not necessarily mean you are more skilled or talented that an employee without these qualification’s, however but it does help when looking for professional work. In my opinion………..!

Personally, I thought art school was more than worth it overall. It gave me exposure to various new mediums and approaches to art making. I was surrounded by like minded people who had shared interest’s and passions, and most importantly it gave me the time and resources to really develop my studio practice and learning habit’s. (Not to mention the connections through networking/internships, constant feedback on your work from tutors, etc).  However, formal teaching certainly isn’t for everyone.  At the end of the day, going to art college is an incredibly personal journey – it still all depends upon you and the work you put in.  It also depends on how passionate about Art, Craft or Design you really are.  Maybe it is just a hobby and not a career choice for you. Do you follow your head and settle for a ‘non creative job’ that will pay the bills OR do you do what I did, follow your heart and continue pursuing your love of Art by going to Art college?  Some people may undertake different career paths early in their lives and then decide to veer back on the creative path years later. Again, this is a personal journey and one which you must decide for yourself.

A lot of the time I find these days I find that there are so many people who are quick label themselves as artist’s, makers or designer’s but who did not create or design anything. This truly baffles me! Take for example, some celebrities, a lot of them are labeling themselves credible ‘fashion designers’ when a team of creatives behind the scenes in a studio somewhere have created their clothing line/product’s for them. Their only involvement may be a rough doodle, concept or lending their name or brand. Of course, these celebrities are making the most of their status’s/situation’s and collaborating with creatives also gives the ‘maker’ more exposure but I must admit it does really irritate me when people decide that they can label themselves as an artist or designer when genuine artist’s/designer’s have spent years perfecting their specialized area of expertise.  In my opinion, if you did not create something with your own two hands using your own talents, concepts and skills you should not label yourself as a credible artist, maker or designer!

I did go to art college so I am probably a little biased about this. I think that people should respect artist’s, designers and creatives career’s more and take their professions seriously. For example, I would never dream of calling myself a ‘fashion designer’. Yes, I love fashion and yes I appreciate good design. I respect fashion designers and the vast array of skills and talents that they have developed over a number of years throughout their career.  They take their industry seriously and so do I. I have ZERO experience designing fashion garment’s and I am aware that I do not have the skill set to do so.  I do see that being a creative person I do have potential to learn however, but I would never call or label myself a fashion designer because I just liked the idea or ‘notion’ of being one or I thought it sounded cool!! No more than we would not label ourselves nurses, doctor’s, teacher’s unless we acquired those skills and had formal training in those industries.  Whenever I’m talking to artists about their biographies or cv’s the question of art education, or lack thereof, often comes up. Artist’s who have completed extensive academic training want to know how best to leverage that training to build their credibility. Artist’s who don’t have formal training, want to know if it will hurt their prospects for gallery representation and sales.  Both those that have been formally trained, and those who haven’t, are curious to know how much art education matters. I suspect, those who went through extensive schooling want to know if it was worth it. Self-taught artists wonder if they should matriculate or face the consequences.  Unfortunately, there’s no simple answer to the question, “Is an art education worth the investment?”  In my opinion the answer is YES but choosing whether to go to art college is a personal decision.

A little bit about my Art background and Art Education…….

As you know I work as an Art, Craft and Design teacher in a secondary school Monday to Friday. I also run evening art classes for adult’s who wish to connect with their creative side, take up a new hobby or develop their painting skill’s.

Art and Design have always been a huge part of my life. Growing up I had always enjoyed painting, drawing, making and being creative in any way I could. I would sit at the kitchen table for hours designing, painting and making.  I am always at happiest and most authentic self when creating.  My parent’s have kept a lot of my drawings and creations from when I was a child and it is so interesting to look back through them from time to time.  They can be very revealing. I always enjoy looking through my sketchbooks from art college and re visiting those sketches and paintings.

Art was my favourite subject throughout secondary school and the art room was always a place where I felt the most comfortable and that I could really express myself.  After secondary school I completed a one year BA Hons Diploma in Art and Design in Limavady. This one year course was very intense with long hours and a massive work load concentrating on developing my art portfolio. I had also applied for a psychology course and deferred it for a year in order to suss out whether I should follow my heart and choose to do an art related degree instead. After my year developing my skills, learning new techniques and experimenting with new mediums in Limavady, I knew 100% that I wanted to continue pursing my passion for art and so I made the decision to go to Art College. Thankfully I had my parent’s full support. They knew how happy Art and being creative made me, how passionate I was about it and they encouraged me to follow my heart.

From there, I studied a BA Hons in fine Art at University of Ulster in Belfast for three years. I specialized in fine art painting in my final year.  In our first year we had to try a mix of everything. We were all assigned a studio space where we could work. We attended lectures where artists, designers and creatives would inspire us.  We attended a LOT of art exhibitions in the evening time. In first year, we did modules and projects in photography, textiles, design, jewellery, fashion, ceramics, printmaking and so on.  We attended workshops in each specific module. I very quicky found out that I was RUBBISH at ceramics and did not enjoy it at all!! I also didn’t have an eye for photography! BUT, I really enjoyed experiencing new things, learning new skills and techniques but after year two I knew that fine art was my thing.  I decided to specialize in fine art painting for my final year and was assigned a studio space among my fellow fine artist’s in the second floor of the art college.  I loved art college,  I loved the people I met who were so like-minded, open, interesting and creative.  Of course, I also enjoyed student life and made the most of it.  Those were the days!!

After completing my degree I had NO IDEA what I wanted to ‘be’.  I have always been the sort of person who prefers to go with the flow but naturally my parents were concerned about how I would make a living.  My cousin was an art teacher and she encouraged me to do a H-Dip in art teaching. I went on to complete a Hons H.Dip in Art Education at the Crawford college of Art and Design in Co. Cork. It was a one year course. I have spoken about this decision to become an art teacher in the past.  I did not necessarily go to art college with the idea that I would end up a teacher.  I was never really one for planning, I had no idea what I wanted to be or do career wise at such a young age. I often think that it is so hard to know what you really want to be or do at secondary school. All I knew was that Art was what made me happy, it felt ‘right’ and most importantly I enjoyed it. For me, that is important and I was so lucky that I had very supportive parents who encourage me to follow my heart rather than go and do a course that I was only doing for the sake of having ‘good career options’.  Since completing my degree and attaining my art teaching qualifications my own art has not taken a back seat. I have had various exhibitions of my work throughout Ireland, both solo and as part of group exhibits.  I love how teaching still gives me time to concentrate on developing my own work.  I have been creating behind the scenes quietly and have a couple of exciting project’s up my sleeve which I hope to reveal this Spring. Right now, I am busy wedding planning, running art classes and teaching but I continue to sketch and develop my ideas in my sketch book daily.

Let me approach it this way – the following list can be advantages to a formal Art education:

Direct Access to Experts & Professionals:

In a formal setting, you will have the ability to learn from, question, and interact with professional artists. Many of whom have spent years becoming experts in their chosen discipline. Not only can you interact with the experts, you can see how they conduct themselves, the way they use their tools and the way they discuss art. This can also become the starting point for your professional artist network.

Credentials:

A degree in the arts can help you on many levels, especially if you wish to teach, or take a position in an arts organization.

Time:

Aspiring artists who choose to take the do-it-yourself approach to launching their artistic careers often struggle to find the time to create art because they may be waiting tables to pay the rent. As an art student, however, you’ll be able to devote the bulk of your energies to making art.

Developing the Concept and Intellect:

In a formal art education you will be exposed to critical essays, art history, contemporary movements, research, various project types, and group discussions—all in an effort to make you a more intelligent artist. One of the hardest aspects of the art profession is determining the subject (or focus) of your art, its intending meaning, and its place in the art world. This skill will take years to develop, and a formal environment will aid in nurturing the intellect and assist in focusing the rationale.

Access to equipment:

Art schools typically have state-of-the art equipment that you’d be hard-pressed to get your hands on in any other way. Even if your medium doesn’t require a lot of equipment, art school is the perfect place to experiment with techniques that require more than paint and a paintbrush.

Studio space:

Along with equipment, most art schools allow students lots of access to well designed studio space to help aid your process.

Expert instruction:

Art school professors are ready and willing to put their years of experience behind guiding your work. Just a little help from even one mentor can save you from years of struggling to figure out who you are as an artist, where you want to go with your work, and how to get there

For me art college was more than worth it and an experience I know that molded me into the person I am today.  Ultimately you have to decide what your idea of being a “successful” artist is.  I believe that no matter how you start on your journey, it is important to learn the essentials of creating.  Everything tends to be more of a struggle if you don’t have a foundation. But let’s be clear – the most important traits to have are heart and determination. Because, if you don’t have those – you ain’t got nothin!

Is it just me or does it feel like the week’s are flying by?! If you are a regular reader of my blog you have probably noticed that I haven’t been writing on here as much lately. With being back full time at work, running my evening adult art classes and with just a couple of month’s to go until our wedding day, I have been quite busy to say the least! As you know, my blog is centered around my two of my main interests and passions  – Art and Fashion.  Although I have been busy saving for our wedding and trying not to splurge on new clothes (I am finding this So difficult!!) it hasn’t stopped me having a little look online checking out the new styles, trends and clothing for Autumn/Winter.

With the changing weather I have rooted out my boot’s, tights, cardigans and jumpers.  In my last blog I showed you 15 of my favourite BOOTS for Autumn/Winter  (read HERE if you missed it). Autumn is without a doubt my favourite season for fashion. If you have missed my post’s – I’m sorry!! I have been pretty busy lately and writing blog’s can be very time consuming so it has taken a back seat for now.  Iv’e a bit of free time today so I thought, firstly I would fill you in on what I have been up to lately then we can talk fashion!

Last week I started back to work after been off for three month’s. I have been trying my best to get back into a good routine again. Let’s just say that the  alarm clock is not my friend!!! As well as getting back to work mode, two evening’s a week I am teaching and running adult art classes which has kept me busy. That saying ring’s true that when you truly love what you do it doesn’t feel like work. I feel very fortunate that I can say this about my job. At the weekend I announced the date’s for my NEW Autumn adult art evening classes which will be starting in both Letterkenny and Strandhill at the end of September and running up until the end of October so I am going to be a busy bee but I enjoy it.  I am thrilled at how quickly places have started to fill up and the interest people have in my classes – so if you have attended previous classes of mine or are coming to the Autumn beginners evening art course – thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Apart from the sudden shock to my system of getting back into work mode, we had a lovely weekend in the hills of Donegal where we visited our friends Mairead and Liam’s gorgeous new baby girl Cadhla. What a little beauty! I had been so excited to meet her and she is just the most PERFECT little thing! Then that evening we met friend’s for dinner and drink’s in our local, the bridge bar in Ramelton ( we love this pub – check it out if you haven’t been yet- delicious food, lovely atmosphere & they always have great music at the weekend’s).

There is no way that I could have managed to create such a beautifully detailed handcrafted wedding invite myself to the standard that ‘Eventful’ did for us. We are delighted with how the final design turned out and once all of our guest’s have received their invite’s I will show you all.  It is hard to believe that there is less than four months ’til our wedding day!!!! So much to do so little time. Crazy!  Time fly’s when you are having fun!

Now, lets talk fashion!!!

This week, I started to notice it got a little bit chilly so I swapped my heeled sandals for closed toe heels and ankle boot’s. During my space time I had started looking for new boot’s online and I came across some little beauties which I thought I would share with you today.  I have included the price for each style of boot featured for you, as well as a direct link to where you can find each pair online. You really can’t beat a comfortable pair of black boot’s for the winter month’s.  I recently bought this patent round toe pair from NEW LOOK via the ASOS website.  They arrived last week so I have tried and tested them and can confirm that they are both comfy and stylish. The heel is not as low as it suggests in the photo’s but I am actually delighted with that as they give me a little extra height.  On Saturday night I wore them with wet look leggings and a long back top. For work I teamed them tights, a dress and a black blazer.  I prefer to wear dressy/casual yet comfortable clothes to work. I always look for comfort in footwear for work as I am always on my feet in the art room. I must admit, I didn’t really like over the knee boot’s last Autumn. Long time to chat/type…..!!

As most of you already know by now,  that is if you are a regular follower of my blog, I work as a secondary school art, craft and design teacher. One of the amazing perk’s of teaching is that I have been enjoying time off work during the Summer holiday’s.  Alongside that I took a couple of month’s off blogging too.  Truth be told, I have been busy living life, enjoying my time off and blogging was not a priority of mine at the time. However, I had been keeping you up to date with regular daily post’s and sharing idea’s on my most popular social media sites, Facebook and Instagram, which I hope you all enjoy. Social media can be too much for me at times and I can find it can be a little fake and unrealistic. Social media is not the REAL world and people will always put their best foot forward to show their good moment’s and picture perfect lives and that makes me feel uncomfortable at times.  I personally try not to get swept into that flat – lay (who has time for that?!) picture perfect world and stay true to myself as much as possible.  At the same time, I suppose as a blogger I do feel a certain pressure also to take on new jobs and collaborations I have asked to be involved as I don’t like letting anyone down, but in saying that I have started to become a LOT more selective and saying no thanks a lot more, either because I don’t genuinely like or believe in a product or I am busy focusing on more important thing’s OFFLINE!

Blogging is a hobby which I do enjoy in my spare time. It has given me a fantastic platform for showcasing my artwork’s such as my illustrations and painting’s,which I sell on my online shop, attaining commissioned work, the opportunity to work with some very interesting people, to promote my adult evening art classes and this little blog of mine still brings such exciting opportunities my way each and every day. I always have so many idea’s running through my head so I find my blog a great place to share them. I genuinely love when reader’s contact me looking for advice on fashion, arts/crafts or recommendation’s and I am always happy to share my ideas and inspirations with them. We all need little break’s now and then to re-evaluate, re-fuel, to spark off that motivation and enthusiasm again – it’s natural and it is needed.

In just under two week’s time I go back to work.  It sure will be a shock to the system but I am feeling very rested, refreshed and looking forward to starting some cool new project’s with my art student’s and to re-decorating my beautiful, spacious art room with their creations.

On Friday afternoon, I was in town stocking up on some art supplies and canvases for my evening adult art classes which start this week (for info, on future classes email me directly to zaramcdaid@hotmail.com) and I treated myself to some new stationary, a new pencil case (TIP: TK max have lovely wash bag’s which make for great over-sized pencil cases!) notebook’s, pen set’s and new book’s. I have always had a thing for pretty stationary – I have lot’s of unused notebook’s which I bought just because I like the printed cover – it must be a teacher thing! I guess I just always feel a little bit more organized on the first week back to school when I have new stationary, as sad as that may sound!!!

As well as buying new stationary and book’s, I always find that starting the new term out in style always help’s put a little more pep in my step too.  I look forward to putting on my new clothes each morning and styling them. But, let’s face it after a couple of weeks when I am back into the swing of it, I will be grabbing the first thing I see in the morning to throw on!!!  I always set off with good intentions – I think we all do!

Today, I share some work-wear inspired clothing which I have spotted from various stores online. Let’s face it, I have been living in casual and comfortable clothing, trainers and flat shoes all summer, I feel as if I almost forget how to dress for work, so I thought some of these ideas might help anyone in the same boat as me out!!

Work- Wear Style Inspiration for Teacher’s:

You really can’t beat a crisp white shirt for work.  I love this short sleeved shirt from Boohoo.com as the weather is still warm enough to get away with wearing a shorter sleeve.  If it get’s chilly add a cardigan, light weight knitted jumper or blazer over it.  Add a scarf, necklace or pin on a brooch to change it up and add colour. I love blazers for transforming an every day look in to a more polished professional attire.  Here, I have sourced a beautiful light grey double breasted blazer from River Island.  Grey is a great transitional colour which will take you from Summer into the Autumn/Winter month’s easily.  I love the gold tone buttons.  This blazer is €80.00 and you can BUY IT HERE.

This white double breasted blazer from ZARA is a thing of beauty.  It is gorgeousssssss.  Perfect over a dress or tailored trouser’s.  I loved the textured weave trim throughout.  This photo does not do it justice, check it out HERE on the ZARA website for a better look.  It cost’s €69.95 but I think it looks WAY more expensive.

If you are not skirt to work kind of girl then why not try culottes.  I love love love tailored culottes for work. 1) Bandana’s & printed neck scarves:

Forget chockers, the bandana is taking over this festival season! If there’s one trend we saw everywhere at Coachella this year, it was the bandana. It’s been a while since I have written a new blog post.  Life has been pretty busy these day’s but it’s been good and I am a very happy lady.  I have been busy teaching, creating new artwork’s of my own, wedding planning (..well sort of!!), working on an exciting ongoing project (…on hold ’til after the wedding D.I.Y bit’s are done!) and also running my adult evening art classes in Strandhill and Letterkenny. Time is flying and I can’t believe that this week is my last week at work and then I will be on my summer holiday’s with three months off!! Roll on!!!!!!  (The perks of teaching!)

Today I wanted to talk to you about the evening art classes for adult’s that I have been running. I am delighted to announce the NEW date’s for my SUMMER art classes which will be taking place in both Sligo and Donegal.  I have been running my five week adult art classes since February in Strandhill, Co.Sligo.  Due to numerous request’s, last month I decided to set up my art classes in Letterkenny, Co.Donegal.  I will running art classes for beginners this Summer in both Strandhill and Letterkenny.

Letterkenny Art Class: Monday 26th June – Monday 24th June @ 7pm

Strandhill Art Class: Wednesday 28th June – Wednesday 26th June @ 7pm

As some of you already know,  my day job is teaching art in a secondary school.  I really enjoy teaching teenager’s and young adults and I love how I get the opportunity to pass of my love of art and design to them. In saying that, I have always wanted to set up my own evening art classes for adult’s and this year I finally did.  I had talked about it for so long but kept putting it on the long finger. I think we are all guilty of this from time to time. I am so happy that I am now running evening art classes and I am in my absolute element teaching at them. As you have noticed by now, I am very passionate about art, craft and design and so I feel very privileged that I get to work alongside people to help encourage, guide and to teach them the skills and techniques needed to help them to create their own unique artwork’s.  The classes I have been running are for beginners/intermediate’s.  Most of the people who come to my art class have had no experience drawing or painting what so ever. The people who come simply want to take up a new hobby, try something different or take some time out for themselves one evening a week. Painting is very relaxing and can be extremely therapeutic.  I have had a lot of new mums coming to my recent classes as they find it de-stresses them from their busy lifestyle and they enjoy taking some time out to be creative.

The classes I have been running so far have been predominately painting classes but I intend to introduce a variety of new art classes in the future.

About my Art Classes:

At my workshop’s I will provide a full range of art classes for people who wish to explore their creative potential, learn new skill’s, make new friend’s, develop visual awareness and deepen their understanding of art processes and techniques through various media such as oils, acrylics, water-colour and drawing media.   All of my classes are aimed at beginner and intermediate levels. Our workshop’s are ideal if you or a friend are thinking of taking up a new hobby.

Not alone will you end up with finished artwork’s to display on your own wall’s but piece’s that you can gift to others.  With tuition given on an individual basis and related to each person’s own abilities in their chosen medium, student’s will be encouraged to develop their awareness and sensitivity to light, tone, colour and texture, exposing them to the technical knowledge required to complete a painting using a wide variety of subject matter of their choosing, including still-life, landscapes, figurative etc, leading to an increased observational skill and confidence in their approach to, and use of drawing and painting application’s.

I hope that you all had a lovely weekend.  How lucky were we to get such gorgeous sunny weather? At the weekend I attended a family wedding in Donegal, spent most of my time outdoors enjoying the sunshine and caught up with some friends.  I have an extra spring in my step today too as I have only got a few week’s left of teaching!! Don’t get me wrong, I love teaching art & design but when it come to this time of the year, you simply can’t deny that the teacher holidays are pretty spectacular! People in other professions always slag me for saying this but my reply is always “Well, you had a choice too, you could’ve been a teacher”!!! I am also really looking forward to kick starting the first of my adult painting classes in Letterkenny this evening.  The sunshine really lift’s your spirits and put’s everyone in a great mood.  Long may it last.

At the weekend, like many of you I am sure, given the amazing weather, I swapped my cosy boots for sandals and lighter footwear.  Today, I thought I would share a few of my current favourite summer shoe styles which I sourced online.

I hope you all had a wonderful bank holiday weekend and made the most of the gorgeous sunny weather. Last week was my first week back teaching after a lovely relaxing midterm break.  As you can imagine, the bank holiday couldn’t have come at a better time to ease us nicely back into work mode! And how fantastic is this sunny weather? I really hope it stays.

During the bank holiday weekend we celebrated the christening of gorgeous baby Jack. We had such a lovely weekend spent catching up with Rory’s family and relation’s.  I hadn’t attended christening in a long time so I wasn’t really too sure what I should wear to it.  I didn’t want to go ‘too dressy’ but I wanted to make effort at the same time.  I had already decided to wear a floral culottes jumpsuit that I got in Penneys a couple of week’s back,  but then when I tried it on a few days before the Christening, I just wasn’t ‘feeling it’ and so decided I would save it for another time. On Saturday morning Rory and I decided pop into Sligo town for coffee’s and to pick up a few bit’s before the weekend. We were strolling through town when I spotted this white striped culottes jumpsuit in the window of a little boutique I had never been in before. I love when you find something you love like that by chance. I have always found jumpsuits so comfortable and I felt that this stripey white culottes jumpsuit was dressy enough for the occasion when teamed with heels and a blazer.  To add a pop of contrasting colour I styled my jumpsuit with red heels (find similar HERE) and a red blazer I got in ZARA years ago (find similar HERE).  I also think this pair of white sling back heels from NEW LOOK would be beautiful with this outfit.  I might invest in them for summer.

Hey everyone!

Apologies for my lack of blogs on here lately.  I am currently enjoying some time out while on midterm break. Today, I am finally getting around to sharing a new blog with you as I am at home dog sitting my little dog Mollie who had an operation yesterday. She is getting lot’s of sleep and TLC. Thank’s so much to those of you who took the time to get in touch yesterday when I feeling a bit down about seeing her in pain, to wish her a speedy recovery.  You’s are so kind and thoughtful.

I have been really enjoying my time off. I spent Easter with my family and had a lovely time in Donegal catching up with some friends.  I always feel like these midterm breaks fly in and that it is so hard to try and see everyone you want to but I am starting to learn that I can’t be everywhere and need to take some time for myself to relax. I am looking forward to the summer holidays already!!

I am now into week two of my midterm break but WHAT a great start to midterm I had with a relaxing visit to Seclusion Spa just outside Bundoran. Since my visit I have been dying to fill you in on this latest spa experience. Like everyone, I enjoy some pampering, getting beautified and some relaxation time, but I must admit that it isn’t too often I find spa’s worth writing about.  Seclusion Spa is definitely one of those spa experiences you want everyone to have, so today I thought I would fill you in on what I thought of this brand new spa.

A few week’s ago I was kindly invited along to Seclusion Spa which is located in the countryside just outside Bundoran.  I brought my mum along with me and it was so nice to spend time together relaxing. Nicola Gavigan, who set up this brand new spa has worked in the beauty industry for years but her dream was always to set up her own unique, quirky and exclusive spa.

Seclusion Spa is her dream come true.  On first impression I found Nicola to be very friendly, helpful and it was very clear she has a wealth of experience and knowledge when it comes to health, beauty and pampering. When we arrived at the spa we took the time to fill out the routine forms and were given time to change into our white fluffy robes and slippers before deciding on what treatments we would like.  We didn’t choose what they wanted until we arrived at the spa but when booking your spa day at seclusion spa it is recommend that you know exactly what treatments you want in advance- you can check out their list of affordable treatments HERE or by contacting Nicola directly HERE.  Do not forget to keep an eye on their facebook page for special offers and deals.

I decided to opt for a back massage and seaweed bath. I had been doing a lot of driving lately so a back massage was just what I needed. Both treatments were extremely enjoyable and I felt great after them.  My mum went for a specialized facial and manicure.  A week later she is still raving about how great her skin feels.

What we both really loved about seclusion spa is that while you were getting your treatments done, relaxing in the wooden cabin sauna or large outdoor hot tub, you could not hear a thing – just silence – peace and quiet.  To me, that is exactly what I want when I visit a spa. We both really loved that. Often you will visit spa’s where you can hear people talking, cars driving past or just the hustle and bustle of daily life going on outside.  At Seclusion spa you are given space and time to relax in a spa situated in beautiful picturesque countryside surroundings.  Nicola pops in to bring you water/bubbles but I love how she gives you the time and space to enjoy the experience without feeling like you are being rushed out the door.

The highlight for me was the quirky outdoor cabin sauna, seaweed bath room and the outdoor hot tub. I mean, who doesn’t love chilling out in an outdoor hot tub?!! After we were finished pampering ourselves, we changed and went into the little tearooms room for some afternoon tea treats, tea and coffee. Again we were given plenty of space and time and could help ourselves to coffee, tea, hot chocolates and an array of sandwiches, scones, buns and sweet treats.  We made pigs of ourselves!!!

I also really loved the tasteful decor at Seclusion Spa and spotted some D.I.Y arts and craft pieces that Nicola explained that she made along with her children. The layout of the spa is very clever too as everything is only a few steps away and contained to one area.  Nicola has big plans for her brand new spa. She spoke to us about her vision and how the outdoor area will look when the grass, trees and flowers have grown and I could visualize how pretty it is going to be.
